Freakier Friday: Jamie Lee Curtis responds to critic’s "harsh" review, details revealed

Freakier Friday is a sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday and is directed by Nisha Ganatra.

The fantasy comedy film is written by Jordan Weiss and Elyse Hollander, and it was released on August 8, 2025, after its world premiere at El Capitan Theatre.

Here is the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,

"Years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover lightning might indeed strike twice."

Jamie Lee Curtis responds to a harsh critic of Freakier Friday

Time Magazine posted a negative review of the film on its Instagram account on August 8. The caption for the post read, in part,

"'No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003’s buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy 'Freaky Friday,'" writes TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprised her role of Tess Coleman in the recently released Freakier Friday, took to the comment section of the post and wrote,

"SEEMS a TAD HARSH. SOME people LOVE it. Me being one."

The film currently holds a 73% review average as well as a 94% audience score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The film focuses on the mother-daughter dynamic nearly twenty years after they had swapped their bodies. In a Screen Rant interview, the film's director, Nisha Ganatra, spoke about what a possible third installment, titled Freakiest Friday, would look like. She said,

"Freakiest Friday... What would it be? I mean, more swaps, right? Probably a six-way swap. We'd definitely have Manny Jacinto and Chad Michael Murray switching places. We all need that!"

So if the sequel does well, fans can maybe expect a third entry in the franchise.
