Sam Vanderpump, the 28-year-old Made in Chelsea star, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with irreversible end-stage liver disease, which has shocked his fans, colleagues and the world. The nephew of Lisa Vanderpump, who is a star of the show, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, revealed his health update on the most recent episode of the E4 series.

Sam revealed to his co-star Ollie Locke in Monday's episode that his doctors had determined that there "is no hope" that his liver would heal unless he got a transplant. He also disclosed that he might live four to five years without one:

"There is no hope of my liver getting better and he said I wouldn't be having this call with you if I thought you could make it through the next four or five years. They're sending me for liver transplant assessment, so yeah."

Sam told Ollie, being hopeful:

"The way I look at it is I'm healthy now, hopefully I will remain healthy all the way up until I'll get a call and go in for surgery and then I wake up and I'll be healthier."

What caused Sam Vanderpump's condition?

The Made in Chelsea star, Sam Vanderpump, was born with two rare genetic conditions, congenital hepatic fibrosis and polycystic kidney disease. The two conditions have remained dormant for all his life. It was only after December 2024 that he had “a severe asthma attack and weeks of flu-like symptoms" and his organs started to fail. He told The Daily Mail:

"I've had liver and kidney disease which has essentially been dormant for the past 28 years. I have checkups every six months and have been told I am healthy, and my liver function is good, and I should live my life normally. They are 75 per cent sure it was having the flu, which made my immune system weak, the disease, which also weakened my system and everything happening at the same time."

He went on to reveal how lucky he was this year after he was rushed to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, as he almost died because of liver and kidney failure caused by life-threatening sepsis. He was taken to the hospital for his flu. Sam Vanderpump said:

"I thought I was going to die. I didn't think my body could cope and that was the scariest thing. It was terrifying. I remember the doctor saying to me that I was going into liver and kidney failure. I burst into tears. My mum didn't react badly, you would expect her to be in complete meltdown, but she didn't want to scare me."

Sam Vanderpump explained how his fiancée saved his life. It was when he went into a disoriented state due to dehydration and back pain, Alice Yaxle, his fiancée, called the ambulance. Speaking about the near-death experience, he said:

"You never think the flu will lead to you being in a hospital bed and nearly dying. They told my mum that if I had got to hospital 24-48 hours later, I wouldn't have made it. By calling the ambulance, my girlfriend literally saved my life."

He continued:

"There is a liver function test, when your liver is performing normally there is a protein called CRP (C-reactive protein), which releases protein into your blood to fight against infection."

Sam Vanderpump concluded:

"They told me I was the sickest patient on the ward."

NHS organ donation praises Sam's courage and his new outlook on life

Following the episode's airing, NHS Organ Donation took to Instagram to praise Sam for his courage. They posted:

"You may have seen in tonight’s episode of Made in Chelsea, that one of the cast members Sam Vanderpump needs an organ transplant. Our thoughts are with Sam and his family as they face this news. We hope that his courage in speaking out will offer inspiration to others."

It continued:

"Sadly, thousands of people are currently waiting for a life-saving transplant because not enough people agree to donate their organs."

It concluded with:

"If you want to be an organ donor and save lives after your death, please confirm your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and ensure your loved ones know and support your decision."

Sam Vanderpump went on to reveal that he intends to use his position and fame to promote awareness of kidney and liver disorders as well as the avoidance of sepsis:

"I'm going to talk about my experience on Made In Chelsea. I told the producers I will be talking about my health issues in this series and how I can help NHS charities."

He added:

"This has given me a new outlook on life. In the past I have used my free time to party and drink and be crazy but now I am going to use my free time very differently. I am currently planning a charity event with Made In Chelsea, which will be featured on the show."

Alice and Sam Vanderpump are expecting their first child together, which makes the whole thing tougher for the family. The pregnancy was revealed earlier this year. Though things seem tough, Sam's will remains tougher. He stated that he is resolved to remain strong for his family, and he mentioned that there "will be higher up on the list who can't survive the surgery."

Sam Vanderpump is the youngest son of Mark and Lisa Vanderpump. Mark Vadnerpump, who was a businessman and DJ, had died almost 7 years ago due to suicide, is the elder brother of Lisa Vanderpump, the star of RHOBH.

Though Lisa has not released any public statement about this as of now, she has been one of her nephew's biggest supporters.
