The Hand That Rocks the Cradle was released on Hulu on October 22, 2025. This thriller film, directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, is a loose adaptation of the eponymous 1992 film.
As per IMDb, the film's official synopsis reads:
"An upscale suburban mom brings a new nanny, Polly Murphy, into her home, only to discover she is not the person she claims to be."
Let's explore the differences between the latest version and the original 1992 film.
Differences between The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and its 1992 counterpart
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle has its share of similarities and differences from the original 1992 film. One of them is the main motivation of the antagonists. In the first film, we are told that Victor Mott had once molested Claire. After a complaint and fearing humiliation, Victor took his own life. Victor's wife loses her husband and child, and goes bankrupt. She then disguises herself as a Nanny named Peyton to work at Claire's house. This is revealed in the first act.
In the 2025 version, both Caitlyn and Polly were neighbors as kids when Caitlyn was molested by Polly's father. In retaliation, she burnt down his house, killing nearly his entire family.
In the first film, Michael and Claire decide to kick Peyton after finding out the truth. This is followed by a fight that leads to Claire killing Peyton. In the recent The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Polly is killed by Caitlyn. But Emma believes that Polly was only trying to save her sister Josie. Sometimes later, Emma continues to recite Polly's line, keeping her legacy alive.
In the 1992 film, Claire suffers from asthma and frequently needs the inhaler. Peyton, at one point, uses the entire bottle, risking Claire's life. In 2025, this asthma problem is swapped with depression issues, with Polly lacing Caitlyn's antidepressants with methamphetamine.
Overall, both these stories have their own flaws and bright moments. Since they take place in different timelines, it is reflected in the storytelling. The makers of the remake pay a hat tip to the original through a red dress, which Claire wore in the original.
The film is currently streaming on Hulu.
