The famous British actress Prunella Scales has passed away on October 27, Monday, at the age of 93. This news has been confirmed by her sons, Samuel and Joseph West. Amongst her many roles, Scales was best known for playing Sybil Fawlty in the classic British sitcom, Fawlty Towers.

According to her sons, Samuel and Joseph, Prunella died "peacefully at home in London yesterday".

Prunella Scales had suffered from dementia for several years. Her family also confirmed that in her final days, Scales enjoyed watching episodes of Fawlty Towers.


Prunella Scales' early life and acting career

Prunella Scales began her career with a filmed version of Pride and Prejudice in 1952. About five years later, she transitioned into television with the sitcom Marriage Lines. Scales hit the milestone of her career with the success of Fawlty Towers, where, in her quick and clever role as the wife of the hotel owner Basil Fawlty, she earned acclaim as Sybil Fawlty.

Although consisting of only 12 episodes, Fawlty Towers is among the best British comedies of all time and is still quite popular.

Moreover, Scales has also independently developed roles of real depth beyond the sitcom; for instance, she played Queen Elizabeth II in the television drama A Question of Attribution, which earned her a BAFTA nomination.

Prunella and her husband, actor Timothy West, appeared together in the travel series Great Canal Journeys, wherein the couple navigated Britain's waterways and abroad. The series' end was caused by her deteriorating health.

Prunella Scales was diagnosed with vascular dementia, which led her to retire from acting, but she was able to remain at home and was a public figure by taking canal-boat trips with her husband. Timothy West died in late November 2024.
