Here is the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:
A young agent leaves everything behind to pose as a member of ETA, risking her life to uncover the terrorists’ hideouts in the south of France.
Let us explore how the film comes to a conclusion and what happens to the protagonist, Amaia.
What is She Walks in Darkness all about?
She Walks in Darkness focuses on Amaia (played by Susana Abaitua) who is a Civil Guard agent. She has been working on an undercover mission for the ETA for a couple of years to get the location of their weapons stock.
How does She Walks in Darkness end?
Towards the end of She Walks in Darkness, Anboto realizes that Amaia has been giving ETA's whereabout informations to the civil guard. She then sents a mercenary to eliminate the target. Luckily, a song meant as a signal if the cover is exposed, gets played on radio. This alerts Amaia and she heads towards the forest as the mercenary shows up to kill her.
An elaborate run amid green fields follows this and ends on the road. The visuals hint that she might have reached the border of Spain and the border police helps her. Colonel Sanchez had earlier said that he would provide all resources for her safe exit. But the film ends on a ambigous note as nothing is shown.
As the film ends, a note reads that Operation Mayhem which Amaia was a part of, managed to capture several ETA terrorists. The arrest of the top bras of the organization including Dagoki and Anboto follows this. We are provided the information but the film refraims from overtly showing these things.
The montage of arrests and swift action plays parallely as Amaia is moving towards the border. Meanwhile, Sanchez successfully heads the operation. But we find out that he will be tried for charges of torture. He had earlier captured and tortured top ETA leader Joseba Landaburu who had died of suicide. But once again, there is ambiguity as the film ends by providing only the necessary information.
This revealation happens during the collapse of ETA. So there is a chance that the charges against him might get dropped. On a personal level, Amaia wanted to have genuine relationships and friendship which were stripped off of her due to the long undercover mission. After leaving that operation, we can expect her to start afresh a normal life and overcome her loneliness.
