What if, instead of archery, green hoods, and the Sheriff of Nottingham, it were about a story of rebellion's roots and identity, and the blurred lines between loyalty and justice?

The Robin Hood 2025 TV series from MGM+, releasing November 2, follows the beginning of the world's most famous outlaw-not as a myth, but as a man formed by chaos in the wake of the Norman invasion of England.

As per The Direct, in an exclusive interview with David Thompson, writer John Glenn disclosed that the team prioritized:

"anchoring it in an origin story… telling the story of how this sort of rebel became this legend, this story originated centuries ago, but there’s a reason people are intrigued by it and want to return to it."

From the Serbian site of cinematic production to the highly historical grounding of the tale, Robin Hood promises a longer, never-imagined story. Written by Jonathan English and produced for MGM+ by Lionsgate Television, this 10-episode series reimagines the story of Robin Hood through raw human emotion, political tension, and conflicts between cultures.

From painstakingly considered set design to character-driven storytelling, each element is deeply rooted in realism and pays due homage to the timelessness of the legend.

A new start for the Robin Hood myth

This is a series adaptation not concerning the fantastical elements of the character, but rather it's about how Robin Hood became that symbol of resistance. It's not about a heroic outlaw in Sherwood Forest from the get-go, but it follows Rob's early life as a Saxon commoner living under Norman rule.

Creator John Glenn and director Jonathan English take an origin approach to this story with a decidedly grounded feel in the prelude to the man he would become.

Leading the cast is Jack Patten as Rob, a man torn between oppression and courage. He brings a youthful realism to the title role-this is Robin before the legend is pushed into that mold by circumstance. He's joined by Lauren McQueen as Marian, a beautiful Norman noblewoman whose romance with Rob centers on the show.

This is a cross-cultural romance that bloomed when social unrest reached its boiling point, surrounded by themes of love, class divide, and rebellion.

Historical realism and cinematic scale

One striking feature of Robin Hood 2025 is the spectacular visuals of the film. Filmed on location for the most part in Serbia, at PFI Studios, Šimanovci, Belgrade, Gornji Milanovac, Varnice, and others, it reproduces 11th-century England with seriously impressive detail.

According to 4Filming, locations were chosen because their natural landscapes include real medieval scenery, fitting for large-scale battle scenes and typical villages of the time.

With the addition of practical effects, large outdoor sets, and historical designs, the story promises to rework the brutal aftermath of the Norman Conquest. The director, Jonathan English, master of medieval and historical epics, promises in interviews that this Robin Hood will be less about stylized visuals but more about the grounded realism of mud, armor, and emotion defining every frame.

As per The Direct, he said,

"It's not that we saw it as a lavish, glamorous production, but we wanted to create the world, and that required a certain production value, a certain spectacle."

He added,

"A lot of that really comes down to Serbia, which is where we made the show. Serbia is an incredibly unique and special place that has a long history of filmmaking, and a lot of very, very talented crew and technicians. "

Attention to authenticity in detailing meets a more general approach of MGM+: fusing cinematic quality with serialized storytelling.

Robin Hood was developed as a 10-episode limited series, which in some ways gives room for the creative team to focus on big-scale production and in-depth characterization within the arc of a defined story.

Themes of rebellion and identity

At its root, Robin Hood 2025 has something to say about the social and emotional fault lines of England after its invasion. It is a story of a time when Saxons lived under Norman domination, an idea of rebellion that is not purely political-it's personal.

It looks at the complexity of tension between the conqueror and the conquered, at the blurred moral lines of justice, and at the price for standing up against power.

As per The Direct, the showrunner, John Glenn, explained,

"Anchoring it in an origin story...telling the story of how this sort of rebel... how did he become this legend, and starting when he was a child and meeting his parents and the community that he lived in, it grounds it, and it makes it more personal when it comes right down to it. So that was a big part of it for us."

This makes Robin not some idealized hero of the woods but rather a man defined by loss and defiance. His transformation from farmer to fighter becomes a metaphor for a greater cultural awakening: a rebellion out of need, not built on a legend.

Grounded vision from director Jonathan English

Director Jonathan English brings a keen eye for realism and scope. Having Ironclad and Ironclad: Battle for Blood in his wheelhouse of directing experience, he has a thorough sense of how to shoot the grit and grandeur of medieval storytelling.

In Robin Hood, English expands the myth by focusing on human motivation rather than mythic fantasy. In statements referenced by The Direct, English highlighted that the socio-political environment of the 11th century has to be conveyed across as authentically as possible. He said,

"So you have a little bit of this sort of Romeo and Juliet idea within their romance, and that's part of the world, because it's this Saxon-Norman world with the conflict that exists between them - all of the politics, the push and pull between the Saxons and the Normans."

He continued,

"It was kind of important that they come from two different worlds. Otherwise, we just really wanted there to be a very strong love story."

His directorial approach makes Robin Hood both a period drama and a universal tale of uprising and moral courage.

Reframing the Legend for a New Era, the 2025 television series titled Robin Hood takes a completely different angle from one of history's most enduring legends. With Jack Patten, Lauren McQueen, and Sean Bean, it boasts an ensemble cast under the direction of Jonathan English.

This reimagines the myth to have modern depth and historical realism. It is more focused on identity, rebellion, and the human cost of injustice rather than just mere fantasy or magic. As a matter of fact, it is about people trying to define freedom during an age of conquest.

This MGM+ production uses its film-like scope, added to its earthy story and authentic production, to reimagine the world's favorite outlaw, not as a myth, but as a man who became one.
