Pennywise is finally back for It: Welcome to Derry, and there are quite a few changes and improvements the show is making from the previous film iterations. As we are taken back to Pennywise's past and his origins, the show is fixing one major issue with the films: Indigenous representation.
Actress Kimberly Guerrero, who plays Rose in the film opened up about what an honor it is to bring Indigenous representation to the show. Speaking to Parade, Guirrero said,
“It’s an honor and a responsibility. To bring Indigenous lore, real history, real people… to show that they were there, that they loved and lost… that’s powerful.”
On the show, Guerrero's character Rose is a small business owner, who is protecting some secrets of Maine Town.
In another event for the show, the actress spoke about her role and said
"Indigenous people believe all lives are sacred. So everyone that is in our circle, we see ourselves as stewards of that life. And so we're there to protect and to carry the knowledge of how we maintain our connection. The native story has been there, but we’ve never had, we never ever able to join you all at the table, and it was like we have stories too.”
More details about It: Welcome to Derry
Nearly four decades after Stephen King unleashed his shape-shifting nightmare onto the world, the town of Derry, Maine, is open for business again, and not the good kind. HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry serves as a spine-chilling prequel to Andy Muschietti’s It films, digging into the origins of Pennywise and the curse that’s haunted Derry for generations. Of course, Bill Skarsgård is back, returning to his role as Pennywise, along with serving as an executive producer for the show as well.
At the heart of It: Welcome to Derry is a young family, Charlotte and Leroy Hanlon, played by Taylour Paige and Jovan Adepo, who move to Derry with their son, Will, played by Blake Cameron James, just as another child mysteriously vanishes. Their arrival seems to stir something ancient and malevolent beneath the town’s calm surface. What begins as an unsettling small-town mystery quickly unravels into a waking nightmare as Derry’s residents are drawn into a web of fear, death, and supernatural horror.
The cast is stacked with both new faces and familiar ones. Chris Chalk joins as a young Dick Hallorann, while James Remar plays the authoritative General Shaw and Stephen Rider portrays Hank Grogan. Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, Matilda Lawler, and Mikkal Karim-Fidler bring the next generation of Derry’s doomed youth to life. Madeleine Stowe also appears in an undisclosed role, adding an air of mystery to the ensemble.
It: Welcome to Derry is now available to stream on HBO Max.
