Mallard's arrival and the case of the frozen victim in NCIS: Origins Season 2 Episode 3

The NIS team, especially Mike, gets quite tense with the arrival of Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard. Initially, they think that Mallard is here to give a bad review about their team, which would eventually lead to the restructuring of the whole department. However, slowly, Mallard’s true intentions are revealed. The team quickly gets involved in yet another intriguing case. This new victim is found inside a freezer.

Her body is completely frozen. Mallard arrives at the scene and introduces himself. He then begins to help the team with the autopsy. He informs that unless the body is thawed, they will not be able to find any clues related to the crime. Mallard's intrusion in the case makes Mike grow more and more restless. He begins to lash out at people.

As the case progresses, it is initially believed that the woman’s husband might be involved in the case. It is also revealed that the victim worked for many other companies, solving their IT-related issues. The case is complicated with these small details; however, no big revelation related to the cause of her death is found.

After the hand of the victim is finally thawed using water, a piece of paper is found containing the word “ROLAM”. The team deduces that the killer must be the woman’s husband, as his name is Roland. Roland’s interrogation begins. However, nothing fruitful comes out of the situation. On the other hand, when the body is fully thawed, Mallard finds that the victim did not have any poison in her body.

She did not even have any strangling marks on her neck. The chances of the husband being the killer decrease. Soon, Gibbs and Mike begin to visit the companies where the victim used to work. New evidence related to the case is found on a floppy disc. When the floppy disk is checked, plans for a bioweapon are found.

Seeing the formula of the bioweapon, Mallard understands that the victim was killed using the same nerve agent. However, the evidence that could have been found in the body was lost. This is because the body was thawed. However, Mallard’s intellect comes in handy. He remembers that the victim had a filling in her teeth made of porcelain.

After testing the filling, the evidence is found, and the criminal is caught. It was one of the companies where she was consulting. It was the seed processing company that created its own pesticides, and the victim found out about the truth, which led them to kill her.

Through Mallard’s presence in this episode of NCIS: Origins Season 2, Mike and Lala get a lot of help. Mike’s emotional distress caused him to lash out. This is revealed when he was getting checked by Mallard about his head injury. He began asking Mallard if he knew anything about dogs. Mallard informs him that dogs often mimic their owner’s mental state.

Mike then reveals that his troubled relationship with his elder brother is causing him to get depressed. This turn is getting mimicked by his dog. On the other hand, Lala’s conversation with Mallard helps her to understand that her injury has changed her likes and dislikes.

Mallard urges her to understand that her heart is still the same. Both Mike and Lala were having emotional difficulties, which Mallard solved easily with his distinct nature. Throughout this episode of NCIS: Origins Season 2, Mallard’s contribution propelled the story forward in an intriguing manner.
