When it comes to one of the most influential and discussed animated shows, The Simpsons would definitely cross most of the minds. It follows the not-so-perfect but lovable family living in the made-up town of Springfield, whose life is anything but ordinary.
Recently, a big update has arrived about the show, that longtime showrunner Al Jean is stepping down from the position after more than two decades. This news comes straight from Jean, who posted on X about his exit and that the upcoming episode on November 2 will be his last.
Jean's post reads:
"Thank you for watching @TheSimpsons tonight … next week the last (Simpsons) episode I’ll showrun (at least for now) although as always I’m still thrilled to work on the show. 11/2 an episode by a brilliant new director and a writer I am never satisfied with …"
Jean mentioned being grateful to the fans who watch and support the TV series. And even though he's leaving, the showrunner is excited for the future of The Simpsons.
The Simpsons showrunner AI Jean confirms his exit after 25 years
What makes The Simpsons one of the best and engaging animated TV sitcoms is the perfect blend of humor, smart writing, sharp commentary, and visionary leaders who aim to offer fresh stories to the viewers. And AI Jean is among them.
As shared above, AI Jean will no longer serve as the showrunner, as the position is now being taken up by Matt Selman. He has been a showrunner alongside Jean before, but this time, Selman will lead solo.
Following the update, fans must be wondering if there will be any changes to the show or its tone. Jean is leaving after Season 37, Episode 5, and fans will only know about any new direction in Episode 6.
Jean once said that he never goes "into a season thinking this will be my last..." and though there were thoughts about concluding The Simpsons after Season 23, they worked it out. And now, the show is in its 37th Season.

Reasons why The Simpsons remains a hit animated sitcom, explored
While visionary leaders like AI Jean are one of the reasons behind the show's success, other elements that add to the popularity include:
Satire and social commentary: From politics to pop culture, the show has never shied away from highlighting topics that catch everyone's attention.
Humor: Another reason it appeals to such a wide audience is its range of humor. You’ll find everything from silly slapstick and goofy one-liners to clever wordplay, subtle references, and even math jokes. It was one of the first cartoons that adults could enjoy just as much as kids.
A realistic and funny family: The show is also known for featuring an imperfect family. They argue, make mistakes, and even call out each other. But that never affects the love they have for each other.
Apart from being the longest-running American sitcom and animated show, The Simpsons has secured multiple Emmy awards and even People’s Choice Awards.
