Tracker: Showrunner explains Jensen Ackles’ "death” scene and Russell spinoff

The latest episode of Tracker Season 3 gave us another heartfelt moment between the Shaw brothers. While they were successful in bringing down The Process, there were also several entertaining moments, such as Russell's fake death scene.

While tracking down The Process, they also had to fake Russell's death, as they had given one of their victims the task of killing him. The scene was Russell pretending to be dead with ketchup splattered on him. In a TV Line interview, Elwood Reid, showrunner of Tracker, shared how they had planned to show the brothers arguing over how to fake Russell's death, but due to time constraints, ended up showing just the results. He said:

"We shot a whole bit where they argued about how to fake the death."

At the end of the episode, Russell shared with his brother, Colter, that he wanted to use his military skills to help people just as Colter does, giving us another heartfelt moment between the two. As Russell decides to follow a new path in his life, the seed of a spinoff series was planted in the fans' minds. However, Reid revealed in the interview that at the moment, there is no spinoff being developed.

Tracker: Showrunner's comments on the surprising death scene and a spinoff series

After they had destroyed The Process's plan by rescuing Reenie's client's daughter in the premiere episode of Tracker Season 3, they got themselves entangled in the organisation's activities and also became targets themselves.

In Episode 2 of Tracker Season 3, we are introduced to another of The Process's victims, Harith Holmes. He is tasked to kill Russell. However, he fails as the brothers catch him before he can cause any harm. Through him, they learn that The Process blackmails and forces their victims to carry out their tasks by keeping their families as leverage.

Therefore, to save his son, they plan to fake Russell's death with a lot of tomato ketchup splattered on him, to throw the shady organisation off. In the TV Line interview, showrunner Elwood Reid shared that they planned a sequence where the Shaw brothers would argue about how to plan the death scene, but had to get rid of it at the end.

To add to his previous comment, he said:

"Russell's the I've done this before' guy, while Colter's trying to do everything by the book. It was funny, but we had to cut it for time. The ketchup shot said it all - and it's perfectly on-brand for Russell."

With Randy's help, they learned that The Process consists of former students of Professor Susan Tate, who created this experiment but ended it due to the students' terrifying response, as some demonstrated their inclination toward cruelty and abuse of power.

After ending The Process, Russell tried to talk to Colter about their mother, but dropped the subject due to Colter needing more time. He further shared with him about wanting to use his skills to help people like Colter does, hinting at a Tracker spinoff series on Russell's adventures.

However, Reid confirmed that there was no spinoff at work for Jensen Ackles' character, Russell. He agreed that Russell's decision at the end does make way for a series, but he is just "manifesting it" right now and said:

"We didn't even ask for permission. We just put it in there. As the kids say, I'm manifesting it. It could be a lot of fun if the timing ever lines up."
